I had an odd resemblance in those days to an illustration of the character Peason from Geoffrey Willans’ and Ronald Searle’s ‘Molesworth’ books. Also on at the Nashville- Racing Cars, of ’They Shoot Horses, Don’t They’ fame, Cado Belle, from Scotland, with Maggie Reilly, Squeeze, whom Andy Metcalfe later joined, the Police, only 75p when we were £1, and the Banned, who made number 36 with ‘Little Girl’. The Soft Boys are humorously (at least to ourselves) identified as Vince Baxter and the Dynamos. We are also described as ‘the closest band we have yet produced to Pere Ubu’. Did ‘we’ produce a band more similar to Pere Ubu later on? Later on, the Soft Boys were Pere Ubu’s warm up band. On the first night, in those days of sullen reserve, which people thought was ‘cool’, their lead singer, David, burst into the room backstage, all geniality, bonhomie, introductions and good cheer. It was possible after all to rock’n’roll and be a good egg.
