We run into trouble with the Mothmen- we have unknowingly pipped them to the post with our cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Vegetable Man’. They claim to be more ‘relevant’ (cue Bluebottle at the end of ‘I’m Walking Backwards For Christmas’ protesting ‘’Ere, I didn’t think much of that, I thought my side was better’).
Gerry Hale and Robb Appleton were both members of Cambridge band Telephone Bill and the Smooth Operators. (Another Smooth Operator was Chris Cox who appears on the Robyn Hitchcock album ‘I Often Dream of Trains’).
Four out of eight bands advertised this week at the Hope and Anchor are still going! (2024):
Seven Year Itch- one single available- Ooh Ya Ha- I Wanna Make You- the standard da da da da da da da da thing of the time
The Lemons- poppy ska, matching yellow suits and bow ties
Hank Wangford Band- stage name of Dr Samuel Hutt- still going, age 83- cheery country rock
Johnny Mars- American bluesman- still going, age 81
The Scene- mod revival- still going (mod has had several revivals)
The Keys- power pop 1979 to 1983
Nine Below Zero- well established purveyors of rhythm and bluesy rock- still going
